On The Level, 1965-2006

On the Level began as a mimeographed publication in 1961, published by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Local 452 in Vancouver, BC. Visit the On the Level digital archive (external link).

In 1965, the first printed tabloid edition was issued. It was sponsored jointly by Locals 452 and 1928. At the time, the union stated its goal for the newspaper was to bring the leadership and members closer together and provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute. The hope was to encourage members to attend meetings.

From then, until 2006, On the Level provided a consistent voice for the union to “promote social criticism from a trade union perspective and raise awareness on issues of worker health and safety” and to communicate to its members regarding such topics as union news and events, labour disputes, labour legislation, and union benefits.
