Upcoming Talk! Behind the Seams: Vancouver’s Garment Industry in the 1900s

July 30, 2025

Vancouver may not be widely known for its garment industry, but for most of the 20th century, clothing factories (staffed largely by women) were an important part of the city’s industrial landscape. In this upcoming presentation, we trace a century of garment manufacturing in Vancouver, from the rise of factory work to its push underground.

We will talk about some iconic Vancouver brands, like Marjorie Hamilton and Jantzen, but moreover we will focus on the experiences of the workers themselves. The long-standing struggles of garment workers for fair and dignified work are all-too familiar today.
