Federation News and Views, 1952 newspaper

This item is a single issue of “Federation News and Views” dated December 12, 1952, Vancouver, BC, a publication of the Federation of Telephone Workers (FTW), a significant labour union in British Columbia, originally chartered in 1944.

The FTW became the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) in the late 1970s and later United Steelworkers Local 1944. For much of its early history, it served as the exclusive bargaining agent for workers at the BC Telephone Company (now TELUS).

The newspaper was an official communication channel for the union, aiming to keep its membership informed and engaged. It is uncertain how many issues of the newspaper were published. Other archival collections hold issues dating from 1946-1951.

This edition highlighted a concern about member apathy, indicating a struggle to maintain member interest and justify the expenditure of the publication. The article further stressed the importance of an official union publication and urged members to take a more active part in the union’s business to prevent stagnation.

“Federation News and Views” was a key part of the union’s efforts to communicate with its members and advocate for their interests.
