Ray Gardiner Fonds
Ray Gardiner spent most of his life in Prince Rupert, BC, having arrived during World War II to find work at the shipyards. His union work was mainly in the United Fisherman and Allied Workers Union, serving as northern organizer for a period in the 1960s.
Later in life Gardiner worked in the BC Ambulance Service, beginning when the service was created by BC’s first NDP government in 1974. During that period he was a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
The records cover a broad range of items collected during a lifetime of membership in different unions, the CCF and the NDP. He was involved in many fishing industry and community issues, and served on the hospital board.
The collection was donated by his son following Ray’s death. Some books were removed to the BCLHC Library. Some buttons and badges were donated to the David Yorke Labour History Collection.
