The Red Flag, 1918-1919

The Red Flag was launched by the Socialist Party of Canada (SPC) in 1918 when The Western Clarion was banned by the government. Visit The Red Flag digital archive (external link).

The Red Flag said it was a “Journal of News and Views Devoted to the Issues of the Working Class” whose office was at 401 East Pender Street, Vancouver BC. The first issue noted the state’s interference with the postal service and its censorship of party correspondence. The ban was lifted in 1920.

Topics include:
● the shifting policy of the British government towards Soviet Russia, moving from condemnation to a more conciliatory approach
● critical analysis of the concept of a minimum wage and the 48-hour week, arguing that these measures do not truly benefit the working class and serve the interests of employers.
