Asbestos Case Study, Teaching Materials

Designed for secondary students and union orientation classes, this case study provides a historical perspective on asbestos exposure in British Columbia. Participants are encouraged to consider the ongoing dangers of asbestos for workers and their families and to discuss the legacy of asbestos production in Canada.

The workshop utilizes various materials, including handouts covering asbestos background information, historical images of asbestos production, current safety gear, and the personal story of Dave Ford, a worker affected by asbestos.

The activity guides participants through gauging prior knowledge, examining historical images and discussing related questions, learning about Dave Ford’s experience, and watching the video.

Key discussion points include the widespread exposure of both men and women, the lack of protective gear in historical contexts, and the continued risks of asbestos.

The lesson concludes with general discussion questions about asbestos in Canada, including its ban, global production, and ways to protect future generations of workers. The lesson also offers adaptations for shorter or longer workshops, suggesting the use of additional resources.
