The Lardeau Eagle, 1900-1904

The Lardeau Eagle was founded in 1900 by Parm Pettipiece, in Ferguson, BC. Pettipiece. He was one of the founders of Socialist Party of Canada and published his views in the newspaper, including his support for women’s enfranchisement. Visit the Lardeau Eagle digital archive (external link).

The newspaper underwent several name changes in its early months, starting as The Ferguson Eagle and then becoming The Lardeau Eagle. Pettipiece was instrumental in the paper’s early development before he sold it and moved to Vancouver to continue his socialist publishing endeavors.

During the period of Pettipiece’s leadership, some of the topics published included:
● report on the provincial elections
● a potential smelter and railway for the Lardeau district
● a new plan to reform politics by doing away with parties and politicians
● the financial crisis in British Columbia and suggesting socialism as a remedy, with profits from industries going into the provincial treasury
● changes in the Canadian Pacific Railway’s timetable, which improved mail service to the camp
